I have never been much for 'blogging' but thought this may be the perfect time in my life to give it a shot. I have been following the blogs of dear friends through their most important and challenging times in their lives and since I enjoyed theirs so much, I felt this may be a way to not only inform my friends and family of Harper's journey but a bit of therapy as well. Please forgive me if I begin to ramble, but I have a feeling I will have much to say about this amazing new blessing I have been given.
I have already sent everyone the first installment of Harper's arrival and what she has faced up to today so I will begin with her most recent progress. We arrived at the hospital this afternoon for her 5:00 pm feeding. This was an exciting time as it was her first attempt eating through a bottle. Once again, something that may sound so mundane to most, but a tremendous step in the right direction for her. She initially seemed interested but quickly lost sight of the purpose of sucking for nutritional value and not for pleasure. A few sucks and she called it quits. She has been accustomed to giving a few sucks on her pacey while getting a full tummy through her feeding tube. All the satisfaction of feeling full without any of the work. It was just her first attempt and we will try again tomorrow. They do not want to try the bottle at every feeding as it would wear her out and possibly cause more setbacks. Keep in mind, she must take all feedings through a bottle before we can begin to think about bringing her home. The journey has just begun in many ways.
She has made other tremendous progress aside from feeding. Her oxygen tube was removed today and she made a move from the top tier of care in the NICU to a Stepdown NICU. Stepdown in this case is a good thing. It is really a 'step up' from where she initially was. Her new room has plenty of nice windows just perfect for artwork from her big brother and big sister. She is continuing to show good signs of improvement and will possibly loose her IV tomorrow.
Harper will have a big day tomorrow as she will meet her Mimi and Pepaw who will be driving in fromChattanooga . We hope she gets plenty of rest tonight as she will have lots of visitors tomorrow.
